Sweden to support households affected by high electricity prices

by

Sweden will compensate households hardest hit by rising electricity prices, Swedish Finance Minister Michael Demberg said today, with the government forecasting 6 billion Swedish kronor (about 583.58 million euros) to be allocated.

The Swedish government has announced that it will cover three months from December 2021 with a maximum amount of 2,000 kroner (approximately 194.6 euros) per household per month.

The government also clarified that this money will receive about 1.8 million households.

“These are emergency measures taken for an emergency,” Dumbergh told a news conference.

Electricity prices have risen in Sweden in recent months – especially in the south – although these increases have been less significant than in many other parts of Europe.

Sweden’s electricity comes mainly from its own hydroelectric, wind and nuclear power plants, and the country does not rely on gas imports.

However, prices are set in international markets, which means that Swedish consumers have also been hit by rising prices.
