Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan delivered a rousing speech to his supporters in the early hours of this morning, assuring that he is “clearly ahead” after the first round of Turkey’s presidential election yesterday, but appearing to now accept that a second round, the result of which will be “respected”, is indeed necessary.

Furthermore, the Turkish president claimed that his faction, the Justice and Development Party (AKP), secured the majority of seats in the Turkish Parliament together with its partner, the far-right nationalist party MHP.

He thanked his supporters and citizens for the “record turnout” in the election – the percentage has not been announced, but it is estimated to have reached as high as 90% – while rejecting the opposition’s allegations of manipulation of the results.

“Our country, our nation won”, he said, characterizing the electoral process as exemplary, an “example” for the world, according to him: “Turkey has shown that it is among the leading democracies of the world”.
