A Canadian tourist was murdered in the Mexican state of Oaxaca this week, local authorities said Tuesday, a day after another foreign visitor died in the popular destination.

According to authorities in Oaxaca, the Canadian citizen was murdered in Puerto Escondido, a quiet beach town frequented by surfers.

The case is being investigated, they added without specifying what the motive was.

A day earlier, state prosecutors said Benjamin Gamont, a 21-year-old Argentine national who was attacked with a machete on May 12 in the nearby Chacaua coastal area, succumbed to his injuries after being taken to a hospital in the capital.

According to state prosecutors, the man who allegedly carried out the attack on the young man, as well as two other tourists from Argentina who survived, has been arrested and taken into custody and is being charged with murder.

A relative of Benjamin Gamont reported via social networking sites that the young man died “heroically” after a struggle.

In Oaxaca and its coasts crime rates are noticeably lower compared to other areas of Mexico.

Earlier this year, two Americans visiting a northern Mexican state were murdered by a gang.
