“Dribbling” Erdogan: I want “direct constructive dialogue” with Athens

by

A diplomatic “dribble” for “direct constructive dialogue” was recently attempted by Recep Tayyip Erdogan in an attempt to appear consensual in the West.

According to Manolis Kostidis, in a meeting with all the ambassadors of the EU member states in Ankara, he stated that “we hope that in 2022 the EU will be freed from its myopic strategy, and will act with greater courage in its relations with Turkey”.

Leaving hints for Greece and Cyprus, he stated that “some countries should stop their problems with Turkey trying to transfer them to the EU corridors”. However, shortly afterwards, he added:

“With our neighbor Greece, we activated most of the dialogue mechanisms, we made a special effort to reduce the tension, we agreed to develop our relationship, to focus our attention on the tourism agenda, economic and trade cooperation. I sincerely believe that the two neighbors with a direct constructive dialogue can settle the affairs between us “.

Regarding the Cyprus issue, the Turkish president insisted that “Turkish Cypriot sovereignty should be recognized”, but refrained from talking about two states to EU diplomats.

Erdogan’s statements come just hours after the provocative Turkish attack on the President of the Republic. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs sent a message to Ankara to stop poisoning the climate between the two countries, to distort reality, and to succeed against a Greek high-ranking official in violation of basic rules of diplomatic practice.
