Tokyo announced today that it is adopting further sanctions against Russia, following a commitment made by G7 member states at their summit in Hiroshima (western Japan) late last week.

Japan will proceed with imposing new sanctions, more specifically freezing the assets of 17 Russian citizens and 78 Russian organizations and companies, as well as banning the export of goods and services to 80 Russian entities, government spokesman Hirokazu Matsuno announced.

The export bans concern products intended for companies linked to the military-industrial complex, as well as the construction and engineering service sectors.

The measures are being announced as other G7 members – the US, the EU, Britain – have already stepped up their own sanctions against Russia fifteen months after its military invasion of Ukraine.

Japan “condemns” Russia’s intention to deploy tactical nuclear weapons in Belarus and calls on the two countries to “stop such actions that exacerbate tensions,” Mr. Matsuno added.

Moscow has begun moving nuclear warheads to Belarusian territory, Minsk announced Thursday.

Russia’s threat to use nuclear weapons “can never be tolerated”, let alone their use itself, the Japanese government spokesman reiterated.
