The Republican leadership in the House of Representatives has organized a conference call at 21:30 on Saturday [τοπική ώρα· στις 04:30 ώρα Ελλάδας] to update members on the progress of negotiations to raise the federal debt limit and avert an unprecedented US default, a Politico reporter said on Twitter, citing a source who he did not name.

Republicans have reportedly reached an agreement in principle with the White House in tough negotiations in recent days, a reporter for the Punchbowl news site also reported via Twitter.

Earlier, a source close to the negotiations of the two sides said that the US President Joe Biden and the Speaker of the House of Representatives Kevin McCarthy discussed yesterday in order to increase the borrowing limit of the federal government and avoid the possibility of the US declaring an unprecedented default on the beginning of June.

The Democratic head of state also spoke by phone with both Hakeem Jeffries, the leader of his party in the House of Representatives, and Chuck Schumer, the leader of the faction in the Senate, according to the same source.
