From Ankara, he emphasized that the release of former HDP leader Selahattin Demirtas, whom he called a “terrorist”, is out of the question as long as he is head of state.
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan called inflation the country’s most pressing issue in his victory speech and promised to lower it, just as interest rates — which, at his own insistence, fell to 8.5% from 19% where they were two years ago.
“We are planning an economy focused on investment and employment, with a management team of international renown,” Mr Erdogan assured his supporters in Ankara after winning the second round of Turkey’s presidential election on Sunday.
At the same time, he stressed that the release of former HDP leader Selahattin Demirtas, whom he called a “terrorist”, is out of the question as long as he is head of state.
Mr. Demirtas remains imprisoned pending his trial for “terrorism,” a charge he denies, since 2016.
Mr Erdogan, who is accused by his opponents of authoritarian deviation after two decades in power, prevailed in the second round of presidential elections yesterday, beating Kemal Kilicdaroglu, the broad opposition candidate supported by the HDP.
