A 24 years old Russian killed by shark attack off it Hurghadain the Red Sea, as announced today by the Russian consulate in the city and confirmed by the Egyptian authorities.
A lifeguard from a nearby hotel raised the alarm when he saw the shark attack and some rushed to help the unfortunate bather, but it was already too late, according to a diver who arrived a few minutes later.
Egypt’s environment ministry said in a Facebook post that a tiger shark was responsible for the bather’s death, without elaborating on the victim. The shark was captured, according to the same source.
Authorities in the popular Red Sea tourist resort banned swimming, snorkeling and other water sports at several beaches near the site of the attack.
Russia’s TASS news agency said the victim was a Russian man born in 1999 who had moved to Egypt and was not there for tourism.
In a statement on Telegram, the Russian consulate in Hurghada warns Russian tourists to be careful when swimming and to comply with the instructions of local authorities.
