With the new song “What the Hell Are We Dying For?” dedicated to climate change, Shawn Mendes returns.
The 24-year-old Canadian singer previewed his new song with a photo of New York barely visible under a thick veil of smoke caused by the ongoing wildfires in Canada.
On Twitter, Mendes explained the lyrics and cover of “What the Hell Are We Dying For?”. It wasn’t just a coincidence he said. “I started writing this song yesterday morning with my friends in upstate New York and just finished it a few hours ago,” he added. “It felt so important for me to share this with you in real time.”
Although there is a reference to the fires at the beginning of the song, the song seems to be mostly about the end of a relationship (last week there were reports that Mendes had split, yet again, from his partner Camila Cabello).
“What the Hell Are We Dying For?” is Mendes’ first song of 2023. His latest album, ‘Wonder’, was released in 2020, and after that, he released a string of singles in 2021, as well as a track for the soundtrack of the film ‘Lyle, Lyle, Crocodile ” in 2022 (Mendes lent his voice to Lyle the crocodile in the film).
