Expected rains are likely to help clear the air in eastern Canada, but they are several days away from the Quebec region where wildfires are raging, a Canadian government meteorologist said today.

As of Saturday morning, there were 426 active fires in Canada, 144 of them in Quebec. Their dimensions and their premature manifestation for the season are unprecedented. From the Pacific coast to the Atlantic coast they have burned 44 million acres, they have forced thousands of people to leave their homes, while the smoke has made the situation unlivable as far away as New York.

According to meteorologist Gerald Cheng, rain is expected on Sunday in southern Ontario and southwestern Quebec and will help clear the atmosphere of smoke.

However, rainfall is not expected to reach fire-ravaged northern Quebec until after Tuesday and will be light.

By Monday, 1,200 firefighters will have been deployed to the fire fronts, including 100 French, and authorities estimate that the situation will remain critical for the next few days.
