At least 10 people have died and scores more have been taken to hospital after a bus crashed near Greta in New South Wales, north of Sydney, making it one of Australia’s deadliest road accidents in decades.

The accident happened shortly after 11:30 p.m. on Sunday when a coach overturned at a roundabout on Wine Country Drive near the Hunter Expressway off-ramp in Greta, a small town about 41 km northwest of Newcastle or 126 km north of Sydney.

“Initial investigations indicate that 10 people lost their lives. “Eleven people were taken to hospital by helicopter and road and 18 passengers were uninjured,” NSW Police said in a statement early on Monday morning.

The bus driver – a 58-year-old man – was taken to hospital with a police guard for a mandatory check-up and evaluation.

The cause of the fatal accident was not immediately known, but a crime scene has been established, which will be examined by the special forensic police and the Traffic Investigation Unit.
