Ukraine’s Kakhovka reservoir has lost about three-quarters of its water volume since the dam was destroyed but cooling tanks at the nearby Zaporizhia nuclear power plant are stable and at fairly high levels, the environment minister said today.

Kiev claims that Russia blew up a dam in southern Ukraine last week, causing catastrophic flooding. Russia blames Ukraine for the disaster.

The nuclear plant, the largest in Europe, is under Russian occupation and is located to the north, on the banks of the reservoir. It has its own tanks to cool the reactors, even though they don’t produce power.

“Regarding the energy plant, the water level in the plant’s reservoir is stable and sufficient to meet the plant’s needs. The situation is now under control,” Ukrainian Environment Minister Ruslan Strilets told Ukrainian television.

International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) chief Rafael Grossi is expected to visit the plant this week. Yesterday he said the IAEA needed access to check significant discrepancies in measurements of water levels in the reservoir.
