South Korean police said today they have arrested a British man for climbing the country’s tallest skyscraper without a permit or safety system.

British national George King-Thompson, according to police, began climbing the 123-storey Lotte World Tower in the southern part of the South Korean capital Seoul without ropes at dawn today.

At 555 meters tall, Lotte World Tower is the fifth tallest skyscraper in the world.

When he was spotted by employees of the skyscraper, the Briton was forced to abandon his attempt after he had passed the 73rd floor.

“Lotte staff had to get on a lifting platform to persuade him to stop as he continued to climb above the 70th floor of the building,” a South Korean police official told AFP.

“Finally he gave up (his attempt) and we arrested him on our own for obstructing official activity,” he added. “He is now being questioned at the Songpa District Police Station in Seoul.”

In 2021, the Daily Mail wrote that Thompson had been jailed for attempting to climb the Shard, a 72-story skyscraper in London.

Barehanded climbing expert Alain Robert, better known as the “French Spider-Man”, had also attempted to climb the skyscraper without a permit and reached its 75th floor before being arrested and subsequently jailed in 2018.
