“Ukraine expects an unmistakable message about the clear prospect of its NATO membership,” Mr Duda said after meeting French President Emmanuel Macron and German Chancellor Olaf Scholz.
Polish President Andrzej Duda claimed yesterday Monday in Paris that the member states of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization should send Ukraine a “clear message” that there is a “clear prospect” for its admission to the military alliance.
“Ukraine expects an unmistakable message about the clear prospect of its NATO membership,” Mr Duda said after meeting French President Emmanuel Macron and German Chancellor Olaf Scholz. A “green light” must be given to Kiev, he insisted, without going so far as to talk about Ukraine’s immediate admission, an eventuality that seems unlikely while the country is at war, as it would automatically involve the alliance becoming involved in armed conflict. .
He emphasized, however, that he hopes that next month, at the NATO summit in Vilnius, Ukraine will see the “light at the end of the tunnel” that its leadership is asking for.
Mr. Duda participated yesterday in the talks of the so-called Weimar Triangle, a scheme that takes its name from the meeting of the leaders of Germany, France and Poland in the German city of the same name in 1991. The purpose of these talks was initially Poland and other Eastern European countries to come closer to the EU and NATO.
French President Emmanuel Macron had called on May 31 in Bratislava ahead of the NATO summit in Vilnius to give “tangible” security guarantees to Ukraine to prevent a repeat of Russia’s attack. Mr. Duda said yesterday that they are being negotiated “at the highest level.”
