63-year-old Sergio Roberto de Carvalho was transferred from a Budapest prison to the airport, where he boarded a Belgian military aircraft
Hungarian authorities announced on Friday the extradition to Belgium of “one of the world’s most dangerous criminals”, who is considered by Interpol to be the head of a huge cocaine-trafficking ring to Europe.
Known by the nickname “Pablo Escobar of Brazil”, 63-year-old Sergio Roberto de Carvalho was extradited to Belgium on Thursday, Hungarian police said, releasing video of his transfer.
Under tight security, the prisoner was transferred from a Budapest prison to the airport, where he boarded a Belgian military aircraft.
An arrest warrant was issued for Sergio Roberto de Carvalho in November 2020, following the seizure in Brazil of “more than $100 million that came from the criminal organization he ran.” He has since been wanted by Interpol, while several countries – including Brazil – have sought his extradition for drug trafficking, money laundering, document forgery and organized crime-related murder.
He was arrested in June 2022 in Hungary, where police said his organization was “responsible for the trafficking of at least 45 tons of cocaine from 2017 to 2019.” In order to escape the police cordon, he had staged his death and used at least ten different identities, according to the same source.
