Iranian state television reported that Saudi Arabia’s foreign minister, Prince Faisal bin Farhan, arrived in Iran’s capital Tehran today as part of the restoration of relations between the two sworn enemies in the Middle East.

Iran and Saudi Arabia reached a Chinese-brokered deal in March to end their diplomatic standoff and restore ties after years of hostility that had threatened regional stability with countries such as Yemen, Syria , Lebanon.

Iran officially reopened its embassy in Saudi Arabia on June 7.

The kingdom severed ties with Iran in 2016 after protesters attacked the Saudi embassy in Tehran in retaliation for Riyadh’s execution of a prominent Shiite cleric.

Bin Farhan is due to meet with Iranian President Ebrahim Raishi and his Iranian counterpart Hossein Amirabdollahian. Iran has recently been trying to improve its relations with many Arab Gulf countries.

The restoration of Saudi Arabia’s relations with Iran effectively left Israel alone, which sought to isolate Iran diplomatically.

The United Arab Emirates, which was the first Arab Gulf country to sign an agreement to normalize relations with Israel in 2020, formally restored relations with Iran last year.

Bahrain and Morocco later followed the UAE in restoring ties with Israel.
