At least 11 dead and 20 missing are the so far toll from the cyclone that hit the state of Rio Grande do Sul in southern Brazil on Friday.

Search and rescue operations are underway in the flooded areas, with the participation of helicopters. Authorities have warned of the risk of landslides.

The situation in Cara, a town of about 8,000 inhabitants, which was visited by the governor of the state, Eduardo Leyte, is dramatic. “The situation in Kara worries us deeply. It is important that we can quickly map the most affected areas in an organized manner and identify those who need immediate assistance,” he said.

Many residents in the affected areas have sought temporary shelter in sports facilities.

The governor of Rio Grande do Sul said that in the previous 48 hours, about 2,400 people had been rescued. “Our priority from the very beginning was to protect and save human lives. We are rescuing trapped residents, locating missing persons and providing all possible support to affected families,” said Eduardo Leyte.

Significant damage has also been caused to communities in the neighboring state of Santa Catarina, where many residents were forced to leave their homes.
