The incidents occurred in the wake of the prosecutor’s investigation against the singer Til Lindemann for sexual assaults.
About 150 people protested Saturday in Bern, Switzerland, outside a stadium where German band Rammstein played a concert in front of 40,000 spectators, in the wake of the prosecutor’s investigation against singer Till Lindemann for sexual assault.
Before the start of the concert, protesters held up placards reading “I believe her” and “Stop rape culture”, sparking tension with fans of the popular industrial metal band. The presence of a strong police force prevented any deviations.
60-year-old Til Lindemann is accused of sexual assaults at parties organized backstage after concerts of the band Rammstein.
The tangle of revelations began to unravel at the end of May, following the testimony of a 24-year-old Irish woman who was at a Rammstein concert in Vilnius, Lithuania. Shelby Lynn said she was invited to a party on the sidelines of the concert where the 60-year-old singer of the band sexually assaulted her, but she avoided him. She claims that drugs were spiked into her drink because she couldn’t remember anything after a certain point and that she woke up the next morning with bruises on various parts of her body.
In the following days, other girls described more or less the same scenario. All of them had been seen close to the stage and were allegedly invited by Lindemann to a backstage party.
Lindemann has categorically denied the allegations and his lawyers have announced that he will take legal action against the women who denounced him.
The accusations against the Rammstein singer did not deter the band’s fans, since the concert was sold out.
“Nothing changes for us,” said Marie Rouillon, a 51-year-old French woman who, like her husband Arnaud, has been a fan of the band for 15 years. “If the allegations turn out to be true, it will be a shock,” he admits. “But would that stop us from coming to see them? I don’t think so,” he adds.
“Maybe it’s true, maybe not… But I’m here for the concert,” said 20-year-old Lara Andermatt, excited to see her favorite band in person for the first time.
The youth of the Socialist Party of Switzerland attempted to block the Rammstein concerts in Bern. He collected 7,500 signatures, but failed to thwart them. “We are very disappointed,” said secretary Mathilde Mote, adding: “It’s 40,000 people coming to see a rape accused, that’s completely outrageous.”
Rammstein are currently touring Europe. The band’s concerts are dominated by the element of exaggeration, with plenty of fireworks and eccentric appearances by its members.
