All 120 people on board a ferry that caught fire in the central Philippines have been rescued, the coast guard said.

A fire broke out aboard the Esperanza Star, which was carrying 65 passengers and 55 officers and crew members, while sailing from the island of Siquijor to the nearby island of Bohol, according to the coast guard.

Members of the coast guard and firefighters aboard another vessel used water cannons and extinguished the fire around 05:00 Greek time, a spokesman said. The causes of the fire remain unknown.

Two coast guard vessels that participated in the operations to extinguish the fire and rescue the occupants are still at sea near the scene of the fire. The whereabouts and condition of the rescued passengers and crew members are not known.

The Philippines, an archipelago of more than 7,600 islands, has a poor record of safe navigation, with the use of often overloaded vessels and old ships.

In March, a fire also broke out on a ferry carrying about 250 passengers in the southern Philippines, killing at least 24 people, including a six-month-old baby.
