NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg pledged that the Alliance will further help Ukraine modernize its military during the summit in Vilnius, Lithuania, in July.

In statements published in Germany’s Tagesspiegel newspaper today, Stoltenberg indicated that NATO member countries would adopt a multi-year aid package to bring Ukraine’s military up to NATO standards.

He added that the Alliance will help the Ukrainian army to make the transition from an army based on the old Soviet model to a modern force operating on the basis of NATO standards.

According to Stoltenberg, after months of military training on NATO equipment, Ukraine is retaking territory from Russia. He also underlined the importance of continued support for the country, while highlighting the difficulties facing the Ukrainian counterattack, such as the difficult terrain and Russia’s well-established defensive positions.

The 31 NATO members will meet on July 11 and 12 in Vilnius and are expected to discuss continued support for Ukraine.
