US President Joe Biden invited Italian Prime Minister Giorgio Meloni to visit the White House in July during a telephone conversation, the US presidency announced on Monday, saying they mainly discussed “recent events” in Russia.

“President Biden has invited Prime Minister Meloni to visit the White House in July,” according to the press release, which did not specify whether the head of government in Rome accepted the invitation.

The Democratic president spoke with the far-right prime minister “as part of close coordination with key allies and partners following recent events in Russia” and the two “reaffirmed their unwavering support for Ukraine,” according to the statement.

Mr. Biden and Mrs. Meloni in their conversation “coordinated in preparation” for the upcoming NATO meeting on July 11 and 12, at which a decision is expected to be made, among other things, on whether Norway’s Jens Stoltenberg will remain in charge of the alliance or not.
