THE Brazil numbered 203,062,512 inhabitants in August 2022, according to data from the latest census published today by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE).
Compared to the previous census (2010), Brazil’s population has increased by 6.5% or 12.3 million. However, the annual growth figure slowed sharply to 0.52%, falling to the lowest level ever recorded (since the first census was held in 1872).
“In 2022, the annual growth rate has fallen to almost half of that in 2010 (1.17%),” the census coordinator points out Luciano Duarte.
A notable statistic is also that Brazil’s population is 10.2 million smaller than it was estimated to be in 2021.
According to the Fund of United States by Population, Brazil is the most populous country in Latin America and the seventh most populous country in the world.
The southeastern part of the country is the most densely populated, since 85 million people live there (41.8% of the total population of Brazil). The largest cities are São Paulo (11.5 million inhabitants), Rio de Janeiro (6.2 million) and the capital Brasilia (2.8 million).
