Ukrainians began nuclear disaster drills near the Russian-held Zaporizhia nuclear power plant today, regional officials said.

Patrick Rivel, a reporter from ABC News, tweeted Thursday morning that he was in Zaporizhia with Ukrainian emergency workers practicing how to respond if Russia blew up the city’s nuclear power plant.

Kherson governor Oleksandr Prokudin said on Telegram: “The purpose of the event is to coordinate the actions of all services in case of a real emergency threat at the Zaporizhia nuclear power plant,” and called on residents to remain calm.

The Kremlin said today, Thursday, that there is an ongoing threat of “provocations” from the Ukrainian side regarding the Zaporizhia nuclear power plant.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said inspectors were recently at the site to check security at the plant, which is controlled by Russian forces but is close to the front lines of fighting in southern Ukraine.

The UN atomic energy agency has repeatedly appealed to both sides to refrain from shelling the Zaporizhia region.
