New tension in the morning in the Taiwan Strait. Eleven Chinese fighter jets crossed the median line of the Strait – an unofficial border between the two countries – as announced by the island’s Ministry of Defense.

A total of 24 Chinese military aircraft (including fighters and bombers) were spotted near Taiwan in the morning, the defense ministry said, adding that five Chinese warships were participating in the “joint combat readiness patrol”.

Taiwan sent fighter jets, but also warships, as a warning against Chinese activities, while there was also surveillance by missile systems, according to Taipei.

China, which considers Taiwan its territory, has regularly for three years sent its own warplanes to airspace near the island, though not within Taiwan’s airspace.

Meanwhile, the United States on Thursday announced the sale of ammunition and military parts to Taiwan for $440 million, as part of its support for the island.
