The burial took place in the presence of Nael’s mother and grandmother at the Mont-Valerien cemetery in Nanterre, the city where the 17-year-old lived and where he was killed on Tuesday when he was shot at point-blank range by a police officer.
The teenager Nael, whose death was caused by the shooting of a policeman during a traffic control and caused riots in France, was buried today near Paris in the presence of hundreds of people.
The ceremony, which ended at around 5.30pm local time, was “very calm, contemplative and without distractions”, an eyewitness told AFP, adding that many young people attended.
“The atmosphere was very family-like,” the eyewitness said.
The burial took place in the presence of Nael’s mother and grandmother at the Mont-Valerien cemetery in Nanterre, the city where the 17-year-old lived and where he was killed on Tuesday when he was shot at point-blank range by a police officer.
The funeral had begun in the morning at the Nanterre mortuary in a climate of great tension between youth groups and the press, whose presence was not desired by the family, AFP journalists observed.
According to the witness interviewed by AFP, those present at the funeral asked that no photographs be taken of the funeral to protect the identity of the youths.
“May his soul rest, let justice be served. I came to support the mother, she only had him, the poor thing,” a resident of Nanterre, who did not want to give her name, told AFP.
The hearse left the mortuary at noon to go to the Ibn Badis Mosque in Nader for the funeral ceremony.
Nael loved rap music and motorcycles. He was raised by his mother in Nanterre. He was her only child. He had dropped out of school, worked as a delivery boy and embarked on an “inclusion journey” with the Ovale Citoyen club which brings young people together through sport. Nael also had a partnership with Nanterre Rugby Club.
The tragic event occurred during a police check on the rental car driven by Nael, who was in trouble with the law because he was not complying.
Amateur video shows the point-blank shooting of a police officer on a motorcycle, contradicting what police had initially said, causing fires in several cities and working-class districts across the country for four consecutive nights.
The 38-year-old policeman, the perpetrator of the fatal shooting, was charged with intentional homicide. The officer was remanded in custody on Thursday.
