Gay Republicans have called a video posted by 2024 Republican presidential nominee Ron DeSandis “homophobic” in which he highlights his opponent Donald Trump’s past statements in favor of gay rights.

DeSandis’ campaign team posted the video on Twitter late Friday night, saying it marked the end of Pride Month, which aims to promote the rights of the LGBTQI+ community.

“To wrap up Pride Month, let’s hear what the politician who has done more than any other Republican to celebrate has to say,” DeSandis’ campaign said in introducing the video.

It contrasts Trump’s 2016 pledge to “do everything I can to protect our LGBTQ+ citizens” with DeSandis’ tough stance on the community’s rights.

It is not clear who made the video.

“It’s undoubtedly homophobic,” he tweeted Richard Grenellthe first openly gay senior White House official to serve as deputy director of National Intelligence under the Trump presidency.

As governor, DeSandis has supported bills that limit minors’ access to sex-change therapy and ban minors from attending drag shows in Florida.

During his 2016 election campaign, Trump pledged to protect the rights of the LGBTI+ community, but when he took office he was criticized for banning transgender people from serving in the military, while his administration proposed removing protections for transgender people who are discriminated against in the provision of medical treatments.

A conservative gay rights organization, the Log Cabin Republicanspointed out that Republicans need to stand up to “far-left gays,” but said DeSandis went too far.

“DeSandis and his team can’t tell the sane gays from the far left,” the organization said in a post on Twitter, adding that the Republican nominee is “dangerously treading on homophobic territory.”
