The target of an attack was the home of the mayor of the small town of L’Île-le-Rose, near Paris, in the early hours of Sunday, during the fifth consecutive night of riots in Francewas announced today by the prefecture and the mayor himself.

At about 1:30 a.m. (02:30 Greek time), while Mayor Vincent Jeanbrin was at city hall, rioters “threw a car at (my) house before setting it on fire,” the mayor said on Twitter.

His wife and one of his two young children were “wounded”, added Jeanbrin, who called it “an attempted assassination of indescribable cowardice”.

Meanwhile, overnight police made 719 arrests, although French Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin pointed out that last night was “quieter” than previous ones.

According to the report of the Ministry of the Interior, yesterday 45 policemen and gendarmes were injured, 577 vehicles and 74 buildings were set on fire, while 871 street fires were recorded.

For the second night in a row, the ministry had deployed 45,000 police and gendarmes, including 7,000 in Paris and its nearby suburbs, while reinforcements have been sent to Marseille and Lyon, where the most violent incidents have occurred.
