A few days ago in Mexico, the mayor of San Pedro Huamelula, Victor Hugo Sosa, married a female alligator.

In fact, in a video making the rounds on the internet, the mayor of the village can be seen bending down and kissing the little alligator’s muzzle.

The “bride’s” jaws were tightly bound, to prevent her from… retaliating by biting the mayor.

This ceremonial wedding is a pre-Hispanic custom in the state of Oaxaca, in southwestern Mexico, where the indigenous Chodal and Huave tribes live. It is essentially a prayer to nature, a plea to grant the inhabitants abundance. In this way they ask nature for abundant rain, abundant food, for there to be fish in the river.

The seven-year-old reptile, referred to as the Little Princess, is believed to be a deity representing Mother Earth, and her marriage to the local leader symbolizes the union of humans with the divine.

At the “wedding” ceremony, traditional music played and revelers danced begging the native chief to kiss his new bride.
