Nine people were wounded – including a 9-year-old and a 17-year-old – in a shooting early Wednesday in Washington, D.C., during celebrations for the national Fourth of July holiday, police said.

All nine suffered non-life-threatening injuries near Meade Street in Northeast Washington, Metropolitan Police Assistant Chief Leslie Parsons said.

The shots came from a dark-colored SUV coming down Meade Street, Parsons said.

“As he was driving down the street, he stopped” and at least one person from the vehicle “was shooting in the direction of citizens who were outside celebrating the Fourth of July,” Parsons said. “It appears that the shooting was aimed at the residents and the victims that were hit.”

Many victims were taken to hospitals by first responders and others went to hospitals on their own, he said.

The shooting occurred a few blocks from the Maryland state line and about 5 miles from the Capitol.

Police were looking for the SUV, Parsons said. Details on whether investigators had located any suspects were not immediately available.

At least 350 mass shootings have been reported in the US so far this year, according to the Gun Violence Archive, which, like CNN, defines a mass shooting as one in which four or more people, not including the shooter, are shot.
