Research is conducted at France after death threats against policeman where fatally shot him teenager Naelwhose death on June 27 sparked nationwide protests, the Paris prosecutor’s office announced today.

The threats, made mainly via Twitter, also targeted the policeman’s lawyer, Laurent-Frank Lienard, who told AFP he had filed a lawsuit in Paris on his and his client’s behalf.

THE death of 17-year-old Nael — who was shot at near point-blank range during a traffic control — sparked large-scale riots for several consecutive nights with burning cars and garbage cans, destruction of public buildings and looting in many cities across the country.

The 38-year-old police officer who fatally shot Nael is charged with manslaughter and jailed on June 29. His request to be released from prison was denied on Thursday.

His full name and the municipality where he lives were published by the local newspaper Oise Hebdo in northern France, angering Interior Minister Gérald Darmanen and police unions.

The local prosecutor’s office opened an investigation into the dissemination of “information that allows the identification or tracing of a person holding public authority” with the intent of exposing him or his family to the risk of “serious harm to themselves or their property.”

A total of more than 12,000 vehicles were burnt in these riots. More than 2,508 buildings were burned or damaged, including 105 town halls and 168 schools.
