Landslides and floods caused by the torrential rains due to the monsoon in northern India, resulted in to lose their lives 29 people, while some areas have been cut off from the rest of the world, local officials said today.
Authorities are waiting for the rain to stop so that helicopters can be sent to rescue 300 people – including tourists – in the Himachal Pradesh, Lahol-Spiti and Kullu regions. However, the weather service is predicting more rain in northern India in the coming days.
“Monsoon death toll rises to 20 in Himachal Pradesh in last two days” said Omkar Sharma, the state’s disaster management official.
Another nine deaths have been reported in Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh and the Himalayan regions of Uttarakhand and Kashmir.
The rains swept away vehicles, destroyed buildings and destroyed bridges in Himachal Pradesh, the worst-hit state.
In New Delhi, schools remained closed today. Many roads in the capital have been flooded and the region has been declared on alert as the waters of the Yamuna river have risen and there is a risk of flooding.
