An Israeli was kidnapped during his trip to Ethiopia, in the state of Amhara (north), the Israeli Foreign Ministry announced yesterday Tuesday.

On Monday evening, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs received information that an Israeli citizen was kidnapped in the city of Godar, once the imperial capital and the most populous city in Amhara, according to an Israeli diplomatic press release, which did not elaborate.

Authorities are “in contact with members of his family in Israel and cooperating with Interpol” regarding the case. “Israel’s consul in Ethiopia is in contact with local security officials” to secure his release “as soon as possible,” it added.

Amhara experienced riots in mid-April during an attempt by Ethiopian federal authorities to disband “special forces”, paramilitary units created outside the legal framework by various states over the past fifteen years.
