Lama Ghosa, a 30-year-old freelance journalist who works for various Palestinian media outlets, has been under house arrest since September.
Israeli authorities accused her of “inciting violence” through messages and Facebook, according to the indictment, consulted by AFP.
In March, the journalist told AFP that her posts conveyed what she heard “on the Palestinian streets”, that they were “not a figment of (her) imagination”.
The mother of two young children was sentenced to nine months of community service and fined 4,500 shekels (about 1,100 euros), according to her lawyer, Mohamed Mahmoud.
According to an Israeli government website, “general public service” means that he should provide work to a state institution or entity.
She was also given a suspended prison sentence. Which means that if she breaks the law within the next three years, Ms. Gosa will be jailed for six months, according to the lawyer.
Mr Mahmoud said he intended to appeal.
The Palestinian Journalists Union denounced the “unfair decision”, which it saw as a “violation” of freedom of speech and expression.
In March, the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ), a New York-based NGO, called on Israeli authorities to “stop the persecution of press workers.”
Israel has occupied the West Bank since 1967 and bans in east Jerusalem, which it has annexed, any political activity associated with the Palestinian Authority, which is based in Ramallah.
