International media reported that Surovikin had been arrested but there was no official confirmation of this and the Kremlin refused to answer questions about him.
As rumors about his fate persist, a lawmaker from Russia’s ruling party said today that General Sergey Surovikindeputy commander of Russian operations in Ukraine, who has not appeared in public since the Wagner mutiny, is currently “resting.”
Andrei Kartapolov, head of the Duma’s Defense Committee, can be heard saying in a video posted on social media: “Surovikin is currently resting. (He is) not available at this time.’
Dubbed the “Armageddon general” by Russian media for his aggressive military tactics in the war in Syria, he last appeared in public when he made a video appeal urging an end to the June 24 mutiny by fighters of Yevgeny Prigozhin’s Wagner mercenary group while the mutiny was still in progress.
Surovikin is said to have been on good terms with Wagner and Prigozhin, who praised the general, while Wagner’s chief continued to launch scathing remarks against the Russian military leadership, particularly targeting Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu and Chief of General Staff Chief of Staff Valery Gerasimov, for handling the war in Ukraine.
A New York Times report last month, citing US intelligence, said Surovikin had advance knowledge of Wagner’s mutiny and that Russian authorities are investigating whether the general was an accomplice.
Some Russian and international media reported last month that Surovikin had been arrested, but there was no official confirmation of this and the Kremlin refused to answer questions about him.
