London, Thanasis Gavos
THE presenter of BBC One’s main newscast and presenter of major royal events and major election contests for the network, Hugh Edwardsnamed as the person who accused of inappropriate relationship and conduct towards young persons.
The identity of the 61-year-old Welsh journalist, who is considered by many to be the face of the BBC, his wife Vicky Flint revealed on his behalf with a statement released to the media.
According to Ms Flint, she is making the statement out of concern for the state of her husband’s mental health and to protect their children.
“Hugh suffers from serious mental health problems. As is well documented, he has been treated for severe depression in recent years,” Ms Flint said, adding that his condition had worsened due to the events of the past few days, causing him to suffer “another severe episode” and now being treated for near future.
When he is able, his wife says, Mr. Edwards will respond to the stories that have been published.
The statement also makes it clear that Hugh Edwards was only made aware of the allegations against him for the first time last Thursday.
The statement closes with a plea for respect for the family’s privacy and an expression of regret for the copy of the case to the BBC presenter’s colleagues.
A little earlier, the Metropolitan Police had announced that after the investigation it carried out, it is judged that there is no information to establish a criminal offense.
As a result, the police have given the BBC permission to continue its aborted internal investigation into the allegations.
