UK Shots on Russia That ‘Seeks to Install Pro-Russian Leader in Kiev’

by

The United Kingdom on Saturday accused Russia of “seeking to establish a pro-Russian leader in Kiev” and of plotting to “occupy” Ukraine.

“We have information that Russian spy agencies have links with several former Ukrainian politicians,” the British Foreign Office said in a press release. “According to our information, the Russian government is seeking to install a pro-Russian leader in Kiev, while it plans to invade and occupy Ukraine,” the text continues.

According to the British Foreign Secretary, “former Ukrainian MP Yevgeny Murayev is considered a potential candidate.”

The statement also named Sergei Arbuzov (Prime Minister from 2012 to 2014, then caretaker Prime Minister), Andrei Klugev (former Prime Minister Viktor Yanukovych), Volodymyr Sivkovic (former Deputy Prime Minister) Of Defense), as well as of Mykola Azarov (Prime Minister from 2010 to 2014).

“Some of them are in contact with Russian intelligence agents who are currently involved in planning an attack on Ukraine,” the Foreign Office said, as tens of thousands of Russian troops are always deployed along the Ukrainian border.

The Kremlin denies any intention of invading, but links the de-escalation to security architecture agreements in Europe, especially NATO non-enlargement, especially in Ukraine. This claim is considered unacceptable by the West, which threatens Russia with overwhelming economic sanctions in case of attack.

The British accusations were made at a time when tensions with Moscow are being eased after weeks of verbal escalation; Russians and Americans have agreed to resume their “honest” talks in Geneva next week.

Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu has agreed to meet in Moscow with his British counterpart Ben Wallace – for the first time since 2013 – according to a source close to the British Ministry of Defense.

However, this invitation may be called into question after the British accusations.

“The information released today highlights the scope of Russian activity aimed at subjugating Ukraine and the way the Kremlin thinks,” said British Foreign Secretary Liz Trass in a press release issued by her services.

The head of British diplomacy demanded that Moscow “de-escalate” the crisis and “take the diplomatic route”, warning for the umpteenth time that “any Russian military invasion of Ukraine would be a huge strategic mistake at a painful cost.”
