Britain’s foreign ministry on Sunday warned its citizens visiting Sweden against the risk of terrorist attacks in the Scandinavian country, after recent burnings and desecrations of copies of the Koran sparked outrage in the Muslim world.
In its updated travel advice, the Foreign Office points out that Swedish authorities managed to prevent attacks and arrested suspects.
“You have to be vigilant at the moment,” the Foreign Ministry noted, stressing that “terrorists are very likely to try to commit attacks in Sweden,” targeting especially locations frequented by foreigners.
In a statement documenting the British Foreign Office’s updated directive, Sweden’s national security adviser, Henrik Landerholm, confirmed the increased threat level for the country following the burning of copies of the Koran.
He explained that the raid on the Swedish embassy in Iraq on July 19, the attempted attack on the Swedish embassy in Lebanon on August 9 and the gun attack on a Swedish consulate employee in Turkey on August 1 substantiate the assessment.
The U.S. Department of State also warned against the risk of terrorist acts in Sweden in its most recent travel advisory, in July.
