Far-right politician Javier Millay, a fan of former US President Donald Trump, received the highest percentage of votes in Argentina’s primaries
Far-right politician Javier Milletj, a fan of former US President Donald Trump, received the highest percentage of votes in the primary elections in Argentina, the BBC reports.
The primaries, featuring presidential candidates from all parties, are seen as a key indicator for the October 22 presidential election.
Miley exceeded expectations by winning 30% of the vote, in front of more established politicians. It’s a result that Argentina’s media has described as a “political earthquake.”
Primary elections in Argentina differ from those in other countries in that they are not limited to party members, but are open to all who have the right to vote in the presidential polls. Voting is also mandatory.
Therefore, whoever wins the most votes is considered the favorite for the October 22 presidential election.
Polls ahead of the primaries showed Millay trailing center-left Economy Minister Sergio Massa and conservative candidate Patricia Bullrich.
But with over 97% of the vote counted, Miley had 30.06% of the vote, ahead of Bullrich’s coalition with 28.27% and Sergio Massa’s coalition with 27.24%.
The newspaper La Nación compared Miley’s rise to a tsunami.
Miley is a former television personality. Despite serving as an MP from 2021, he likes to present himself as a political outsider.
