More than 60 people are believed to have died after a boat carrying migrants that left Senegal in early July capsized and was spotted off Cape Verde on Monday, a spokesman for the International Organization for Migration (IOM) announced today.
The number of victims is estimated at 63, while 38 are survivors, including four children aged 12-16, Safa Mesli told AFP.
In addition to the 38 survivors, search and rescue crews recovered seven bodies, the IOM spokeswoman said.
According to survivors, the boat had left on July 10 from Fas Boi in western Senegal, “with 101 passengers”.
The vessel was spotted on Monday by a Spanish fishing vessel about 150 nautical miles (227 km) from Sal Island, police in Cape Verde, an island nation nearly 600 km off the coast of Senegal, said.
