Ukraine’s armed forces are no longer hopeful of receiving F-16 fighter jets this year, an air force spokesman said, while Kiev has been pressing its Western allies for months to provide it with such planes to defend against Russia.

“It is obvious that we will not be able to defend Ukraine in the fall and winter with F-16s,” Ukrainian PA spokesman Yuriy Ikhnat said on state television.

But some progress is being made, he added, explaining that operators and technicians may begin training at the press “in the near future.”

NATO members Holland and Denmark have led an 11-nation alliance that will train Ukrainian pilots in the Lockheed Martin-built fighter jets.

The venture was announced in May at the G7 summit in Japan.

It is estimated that fighters from the Netherlands, Denmark, Belgium and Norway will be delivered to Ukraine. However, the training has not yet been organized and the timing of the deliveries is unclear.
