Through a security flaw in an app that all police officers used on their smartphones, hackers gained access to the data
Hackers – who have not yet been identified – managed to gain access to the mobile phone numbers of 2,800 police officers in the canton of Bern, Switzerland, authorities said.
Through a security flaw in an app used by all police officers on their smartphones, hackers gained access in these data, said yesterday, Friday, the evening of the police representative, Florina Senk.
The National Cyber Security Center (NCSC) informed Bern police on July 21 about the security bug in MobileIron appbut although the problem was quickly resolved, the information had already been leaked.
“MobileIron”, an application widely used in many countries, allows employees of a business or administrative authority to securely connect their mobile devices to the employer’s servers.
“There was a leak of data, i.e. names and phone numbers of employees who have a mobile phone, i.e. the whole world,” Schenk told public broadcaster SRF.
For now, it appears that the data obtained in this way by the hackers was not disseminated more widely, according to the authorities.
Bern police said they had no idea who the perpetrators of the data theft were, but said a criminal investigation had been launched.
