Two and a half weeks after the fires that claimed the lives of at least 115 people on the island of Maui, Hawaii, the authorities of this American state released a list of the names of 388 missing people.
The flames reduced the tourist town of Lahaina to ashes, and the number of people who have not given signs of life is fueling fears that the final death toll will be much higher.
“We need your help,” Maui Police Chief John Pelletier said, asking the public to contact the FBI if any name on the missing persons list matches someone who is safe and sound.
As of Tuesday afternoon, authorities said 1,100 were missing, based on a list compiled by the FBI. The Agence France-Presse (AFP) points out that it raises questions about how this number fell to 388 in the space of a few days. Hawaiian authorities have not yet responded to AFP’s request for an explanation.
The investigations into the ruins of houses that were flattened are estimated to last several days or even weeks. The process of identifying the victims is also extremely difficult, since many bodies are charred. So far, only 46 victims have been identified, including a 7-year-old child.
