Permanent resident status in New Zealand to be accessible to people fleeing war in Ukraine
New Zealand announced today that it will offer access to permanent resident status to refugees from the war in Ukraine.
The permanent resident status in New Zealand will be accessible to people fleeing the war in Ukraine who have obtained a special temporary entry visa (visa) before March 15 next year, Immigration Minister Andrew Little said.
“Many of those seeking safety here in New Zealand would never have imagined staying here long-term, but as the war continues, we have a humanitarian obligation to offer them reassurance,” he added.
“We are simplifying the application process for the residency program as much as possible,” he explained.
Applicants will no longer need to take language tests, have appropriate resources, or use any sponsorship.
More than 1,500 special visas for Ukraine have been granted since this special category was created in 2022 as part of the New Zealand government’s efforts following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
