Above the 90% of cultural treasures that have been lost or stolen from British museums over the past 30 years have not been recovered, according to the Art Loss Register, the world’s largest private database of stolen art and collectables.

The figures are presented by the Times newspaper in the wake of the theft of approximately 2,000 items from the warehouses of the British Museum.

Specifically, of the 3,700 objects reported to the register as lost by British museums and galleries over these three decades, only 295 have been returned. This is about 8%.

Experts in the recovery of stolen art believe that the first 12 months are critical to locating and returning them, as after this time it becomes more likely that they will be sold abroad and end up in a private collection.

British Museum chairman George Osborne has said some stolen items are beginning to be recovered, but experts say the incomplete record of what the museum has in its warehouses makes it very difficult to locate the stolen items.
