At least 52 bodies have been recovered from the five-storey building in Johannesburg’s business district where a fire broke out on Thursday morning, authorities in South Africa’s largest city announced in a post on X (formerly Twitter).

Another 43 people have been injured, according to the same source.

According to Robert Mulauji, the representative of the rescue service, the building has been evacuated and a search and rescue operation is underway, adding that the number of dead may rise.

Authorities said the fire had been brought under control, but smoke was still pouring out of the building’s windows and fire engines had surrounded the building, according to images broadcast by local television networks.
