A federal court on Thursday sentenced the former leader of the far-right organization Proud Boys Joseph Biggs jailed for 17 years, after a jury found him guilty of seditious conspiracy for the January 6, 2021, attack on the US Capitol.

Prosecutors had asked for a 33-year sentence for Biggs and 30 years for his co-defendant. Zachary Rell, whose sentence will be announced later.

Shortly before his sentence was announced, Biggs pleaded with federal judge Timothy Kelly not to sentence him to so many years in prison. I got carried away by the crowd and I just moved forward. My curiosity got the better of me. I’m not a terrorist. I have no hate in my heart.” he argued.

The largest sentence to date for the attack on the Capitol it’s 18 years in which the founder of the Oath Keepers was convicted Stuart Rhodes last May. Two other members, the former president of the organization Enrique Tario and Ethan Nordinwere due to learn their sentence on Wednesday, but the hearing was postponed due to the judge’s illness.

The goal of the attack was to prevent Congress from ratifying Joe Biden’s victory in the November 2020 elections. Five people, including a police officer, were killed during or shortly after the riots, and more than 140 police officers were injured. The Capitol building suffered millions of dollars in damage.
