The Kremlin said today that there was room for further dialogue with the United States, but added that it seemed clear that Russia’s main demands for its security had not been heeded by Washington, although Moscow would not rush to conclusions.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peshkov said tensions in Europe were reminiscent of the Cold War, adding that Moscow would need time to consider the US response to Russia’s sweeping security demands.
He said it was in the interest of both Moscow and Washington to continue the dialogue, although he added that comments from the US and NATO that Russia’s main demands were unacceptable did not leave much room for optimism.
“We can not say that our views have been taken into account or that there was a will to address our concerns,” Peshkov told reporters today, adding, however, that Moscow “will not rush” to react.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov also said today that the United States had not responded positively to Russia’s “main” request, namely to end NATO enlargement, especially to Ukraine.
“There is no positive response to the main issue” in the documents received by Moscow from Washington, but “there is a reaction that gives hope that a serious discussion on the secondary issues will begin,” Lavrov said in a statement. broadcast by Russian news agencies.
President Vladimir Putin will decide what Russia’s next steps will be regarding the written responses of the United States and NATO received yesterday, Lavrov said, according to the same sources.
