Ankara-Cairo relations had broken down after the overthrow of Egypt’s first democratically elected president, Mohamed Morsi.
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan met today with his Egyptian counterpart Abdel Fattah al-Sisi on the sidelines of the G20 summit in New Delhi, marking the end of a decade of strained bilateral relations.
According to images broadcast live by Turkish television networks, the two leaders spoke in the presence of many members of their delegations.

Turkey had announced in March the restoration of its first diplomatic contacts with Egypt since 2013.
Ankara-Cairo relations had broken down after the overthrow of Egypt’s first democratically elected president, Mohamed Morsi.which came from the Muslim Brotherhood, from the army, in 2013, under the leadership of Sisi.
At the time, Erdogan had declared that he would “never” speak to “someone like” Sisi.
A day after the February 6 earthquake that killed more than 50,000 people in Turkey, the two presidents spoke by phone. They even exchanged their first handshake in November 2022 during the FIFA World Cup in Qatar, another country with which Egypt recently renewed diplomatic relations.
