UK government to subject migrants to ‘bone age’ test with x-rays
Britain will resort to bone tests – a bone age test – to determine the age of migrants claiming to be minors, the Conservative government, which has made combating irregular immigration a priority, announced today.
The measure is part of a series of new proposals to be presented to parliament this week, Immigration Minister Robert Jenrick said, calling it “a critical new step” in tackling the problem.
Based on this proposal they will be made x-rays “so as to scientifically determine” a person’s age, when in doubt. X-rays may be requested teethof handsof kneesher key or other bones.
The government wants to avoid any adults passing themselves off as minors and thus benefiting from the special help that children receive.
From 2016 to June this year there were 11,275 such cases of people claiming asylum in Britain having their age challenged. In almost half of the cases (5,551) it turned out that these applicants were adults, the ministry claims.
