More than 5,300 bodies have already been counted in the city of Derna, which has been hit by deadly floods, with the death toll expected to rise significantly, even doubling, the minister of the eastern Libyan authorities said today.

“The sea is constantly washing up dozens of corpses”, Hisem Abu Skiwat, civil aviation minister of the eastern Libyan authorities, told Reuters, adding that the reconstruction would cost billions of dollars and called for international assistance, as the country lacks the experience to deal with the disaster.

Meanwhile, the International Organization for Migration (IOM) in Libya announced today in a post on the X platform that at least 30,000 people have been displaced in Derna, the city most affected by Storm Daniel.

Meanwhile, 6,085 people are known to have been displaced to other affected areas, including Benghazi, with the death toll remaining unconfirmed.

“IOM and its partners are immediately sending non-food items, medicines, search and rescue equipment and personnel to the affected areas,” he stressed.
